Victoria & Albert: Art & Love
This major exhibition is the first ever to focus on Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s shared enthusiasm for art. Bringing together over 400 items from the Royal Collection, it celebrates the royal couple’s mutual delight in collecting and displaying works of art, from the time of their engagement in 1839 to the Prince’s untimely death in 1861. It will incude a good selection of ‘state’ jewellery (the diamond collet necklace, the engagement brooch, the Oriental tiara, etc), a quantity of insignia belonging to both Queen and Prince, and a selection of ‘personal’ jewellery (such as pebble bracelets, stag’s teeth parures, images of the children, etc).
There will be a private view of this exhibition for members of SJH on 15 September. Full details in current JHT

Jewellery in the Age of Queen Victoria
This display marks the publication of C. Gere and J. Rudoe's book Jewellery in the Age of Queen Victoria: a Mirror to the World (British Museum Press, May 2010).
Research for the book has uncovered many unknown images in the Print Room and the display is installed in the Prints & Drawings gallery so that these images can be shown together with related jewellery. The display focuses on three specific aspects of Victorian culture: Victoria & Albert and the royal family; international exhibitions and the cult of novelty, and lastly, the appropriation of historical styles in the creation of national identity. Exhibits range from an astonishing image of Queen Victoria in mourning, a rare depiction in full-face, shown with memorial jewels for Prince Albert, to a startling novelty necklace made of hummingbirds’ heads. The display will also reveal some of the book’s new discoveries: a puzzling inscription on a cravat-pin, ‘Not for Joseph’, turned out to be the title of a popular music-hall hit and is shown together with the song-sheet itself.

Bling. Jewellery Stories from the East End
This exhibition explores some of the diverse jewellery stories of people from the East End of London. A collaborative project with the London College of Fashion combining the work of local school children, Foundation Diploma students and contemporary jewellers with an East End link. Every piece of jewellery tells a particular story and what we value is highly subjective. Gold and diamonds make expensive statements about material value whereas an inexpensive trinket might have some profound sentimental value associated with a place, a person or a time in our life.

A Passage to Asia
Europe and Asia have had close relations for thousands of years. Commercial and political networks developed both on land - via the Silk Road - and on sea. Conquerors like Alexander the Great, Attila, and Genghis Khan set out in search of glory, wealth, and power; travellers like Marco Polo, Zheng He, and Magellan were fascinated by riches, silk, spices, porcelain, etc. This exhibition throws light on 2,500 years of exchanges between Asia and Europe and also between different Asian peoples. It presents an exceptional selection of over 300 decorative and artistic objects never previously shown in Europe: burial urns, bronze ritual drums, gold jewellery, ivories, old maps, and unique textiles, as well as extraordinary cargo recently recovered from shipwrecks at the bottom of the sea.

Bijoux d’Israël
This exhibition is the first time that modern Israeli jewellers have been presented at the Espace Solidor. Among others, they include Vered Kaminski and Degani Stern Schocken, jewellery teachers for over 20 years (respectively at the Fine Arts schools in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv) and heads of the departments of jewellery design. All the most promising young artists from Israel have studied under these two great artists. These creative artists, renowned for jewellery in their own country, reflect their experiences through beautiful and powerful work. Thanks to them, Israel has forged a distinct identity in the contemporary jewellery movement, quite different from that of Europe or America. Although they have participated in artistic activities in Europe, their work is autobiographical and shows that they are above all women living in Israel, and that their culture has greatly influenced them.

Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul
In the late 1970s archaeologists working in Afghanistan discovered the remnants of an ancient cemetery dating from around the time of Christ’s birth. Some of the graves yielded large numbers of spectacular gold ornaments of incalculable artistic and cultural value. The legendary finds bear witness to the ancient kingdom of Bactria, situated at the crossroads of a wide range of Eastern and Western cultures. Conceived by the Musée Guimet in Paris, the exhibition presents some 220 works that have miraculously survived the decades of war and destruction that have ravaged Afghanistan.

Glas wird Schmuck 2010
The exhibition Glass in Jewellery presents the latest work of 24 jewellery makers from seven countries. Jewellery made of glass is now perceived as an art form, as "art that can be worn" in its own right, not merely as imitation of precious gems. The works currently on display represent a wide spectrum of colors, shapes and techniques. Two years ago, the first exhibition in which was shown exclusively glass jewellery was shown. Meanwhile, much has happened in the area of jewellery design with glass and there are surprisingly many new things to discover. In this current exhibition the variety of glass is wonderfully made visible again.

Die Berliner Goldschmiede Emil Lettre und Herbert Zeitner
Lettré Emil (1876-1954) and Herbert Zeitner (1900-1988), made a substantial contribution to Germany's jewellery and appliance design in the cultural capital of the German Reich in the 1920s. Both have close links with the Goldsmithing city of Hanau - Lettré was born and trained there and for a short period (1933/34) taught at the National Academy of Drawing; Zeitner moved as a child to Hanau and also visited the local school for goldsmiths. While Lettré's jewellery expresses the timeless elegance of classicism, Zeitner played with the involvement of "Figurines" in the forms of expressionism. The exhibition consists of over 200 exhibits, jewellery displays, equipment, photos and drafts of the two artists from private collections, as well as works on loan from the Badische Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe, the Jewellery Museum at Pforzheim and the National Academy Hanau.

Altino. Vetri di laguna
Altino: Glass of the Venetian Lagoon

This exhibition is being held to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Museum, by organizing an event that highlights its glass legacy, in terms of archaeological artefacts, and at the same time, promotes and introduces glass to a wider public. Starting with the legacy preserved at the Museum, the objective of the exhibition is to provide a deeper understanding of glass techniques used during the Roman era and supported by the artefacts uncovered during the excavations in the area of Altino (both in the necropolis and the inhabited areas). The objects that will be displayed represent an important 'dictionary' of the techniques that were used and known at the time when Altino, with Ravenna and Aquileia, was one of the great ports on the Adriatic Sea. The exhibition will highlight the line of continuity between the ancient Altino glass and Murano glass, whose production has its roots in the forms and techniques of ancient workmanship. Around 400 pieces of glass are shown - jars, bottles, jugs, cups, glasses, plates, balm, but also jewellery (rings, bracelets, pearls, glass paste).

The immortal Alexander the Great. The myth, the reality, his journey, his legacy
No ruler in antiquity appeals to the imagination as much as Alexander the Great (356 BC – 323 BC, king from 336 BC). Everywhere he went - Egypt, Syria, Bactria, Persia, India and Mongolia - he founded new capitals and named them all Alexandria. He left behind a legacy of Greek culture in the form of Hellenism. His fame lived on, long after antiquity. He was an example to many European, Russian and Islamic rulers. Paintings, tapestries and decorative art depicted Alexander’s life and history. The exhibition covers all these aspects, with over 350 objects from classical antiquity to the modern age, of Western and non-Western origins, including important Hellenistic jewellery and cameos.

Wind in the Pines... 5000 years of Korean Art
The 354 exhibits brought from Seoul to create “Wind in the Pines,” which takes its name from a traditional Korean melody, include 12 items that hold the status of Treasure or National Treasure. The artifacts include finds from archaeological excavations of royal burial mounds, jewelry, sculptures, books, prints, portraits and even furniture. The exposition is chronologically arranged, opening with pots dating from 3000 BC, and Bronze-Age stone daggers and horse-shaped belt hooks. One of the highlights of the show is a selection of gold jewelry found in the burial mounds of Silla, which emerged from the Three Kingdoms Period as the ruling dynasty of Korea until the late 9th century. The celebrated finds included six gold-leaf crowns, one of which has been brought to the Hermitage, along with a phoenix ornament from a crown, and some spectacularly long, intricate earrings, rings and bracelets. Other jewelry on display includes necklaces made out of glass and jade and curved jade pendants.

Spanning the last 300 years of India's culture - from the beginning of the 18th century, to the end of British rule in 1947, and concluding with a look at the legacy of the Maharajas today - the exhibition examines the social and historical role of these kings and their courts, bringing to light the ancient royal traditions that have permeated the lives of descendants worldwide. Among the 200 objects on view are some of India's greatest treasures, including the magnificent Patiala Necklace, part of the largest single commission that the French house of Cartier has ever executed. Completed in 1928 and restored in 2002, this piece of ceremonial jewellery contains 2,930 diamonds and weighs almost one thousand carats. The Miniature Worlds of Bruce Metcalf
This is the first exhibition and first major monograph with a retrospective view of the artist’s work. Featuring approximately sixty pieces dating from the 1970s to the present, the exhibition conceptualizes Metcalf’s work in relationship to his interest in architecture, the comics, and the narrative. It examines the social, moral, and political issues that Metcalf has raised in published essays about the handmade and that are acted out by his rueful bigheaded and vulnerable protagonists on miniature stages. In their dual life as wearable brooches, they venture into the world, where they engage the unsuspecting viewer with their stories and distinctive visual language.

Glass Jewelry : An International Passion
The ancient art of making jewelry from glass has undergone a revolution. Today, artists from around the world are creating spectacular pieces, both wearable and purely sculptural, where glass in all its forms complements or even take the place of precious metals and gemstones. The artists in this exhibition employ highly sophisticated glassworking techniques such as blowing, flameworking, casting and sandblasting to realize their ideas. The results exploit the mystery, sensuality, color and reflective properties of glass. The 33 participating artists in this exhibition represent 10 different countries including Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, England, Finland, Germany, Scotland, The Netherlands and The United States. This exhibition is being held in conjunction with the Glass Art Society 40th Annual Conference, which will take place in Louisville June 10 - June 12, 2010.

American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity
This exhibition is the first Costume Institute exhibition drawn from the newly established Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection at the Met. It will explore developing perceptions of the modern American woman from 1890 to 1940 and how they have affected the way American women are seen today. Focusing on archetypes of American femininity through dress, the exhibition will reveal how the American woman initiated style revolutions that mirrored her social, political, and sexual emancipation. "Gibson Girls," "Bohemians," and "Screen Sirens," among others, helped lay the foundation for today's American woman. Each of the fashion styles also has a lovely piece of vintage jewelry from the appropriate era.

All selected are all affiliated with Stellenbosch University; the only school in South Africa teaching conceptual approaches to jewelry making, either as faculty, students, lecturers, or alumni. They have been selected to represent a diverse cross section that reflects both highly conceptual practices, to tongue-in-cheek kitsch, to more poetic material investigations of form. Jewelers in Stellenbosch are trained with a high technical proficiency but the samples also include artists working with contemporary media such as digital video.

Silver Seduction: The Art of Mexican Modernist Antonio Pineda
In the years following the Mexican Revolution (1910–20), Mexican jewelry and other silver objects were crafted with an entirely innovative approach, informed by modernism and the creation of a new Mexican national identity. Antonio Pineda was a member of the Taxco School and is recognized as a world-class designer. Pineda’s jewelry is especially known for its elegant acknowledgment of the human form. It is often said that a Pineda fits the body perfectly, that it feels right when it is worn. Nearly two hundred examples of Pineda’s acclaimed silver work will be displayed.

Splendid Treasures of the Turkomen Tribes from Central Asia
The Central Asian landscape can be bleak and harsh, but the lives of the Turkomen tribes who inhabit the region are enriched by their skill at creating sophisticated and elaborate jewelry. This exhibition features a collection of more than 40 objects, recently donated by Stephen Van C. Wilberding, former senior advisor to the Saudi Arabia Monetary Agency, created in the late 19th to early 20th centuries, focusing on the important milestones and rhythms of daily life of these semi-nomadic people. These objects provide a unique window into the extraordinary decorative and spiritual elements of these tribes and their pastoral lifestyles.

Women's Tales: Four Leading Israeli Jewelers
International art jewelry designer and sculptor Wallace Chan continues his world tour showcasing his creations. The jewelry artists featured in this exhibition - Bianca Eshel-Gershuni, Vered Kaminski, Esther Knobel, and Deganit Stern Schocken - have chosen jewelry as an appropriate medium for personal comment. Although all sought inspiration in their local surroundings as well as in their personal life, these four artists have developed very distinctive styles. While Eshel-Gershuni and Knobel use figurative imagery to relay their personal experiences and memories, the works of Kaminski and Stern Schocken are more abstract in form and focus on the process. Following singular journeys of self-discovery, these four women artists have made major contributions to the field of avant-garde jewelry making in Israel.

Treasury of the World: Jewelled Arts of India in the Age of the Mughals
This is the most lavish display of historic jewellery ever seen in Malaysia. The pieces in this exhibition exemplify the artistic sophistication and technical finesse of Indian craftsmen in the age of the Mughals, especially during the 16th to the 18th century. The Indian Subcontinent is a land naturally rich in gems and is home to the most highly developed range of the jewelled arts of any nation on earth. Some of the most remarkable pieces on view here belonged to a succession of Mughal emperors, while many other objects were the proud possessions of a variety of princely patrons. All demonstrate the dazzling mastery of the Indian jewellery artists, whose materials typically were gold, rubies, emeralds, diamonds and pearls. The objects on display are from the personal collection of Sheikh Nasser and Sheikha Hussah al-Sabah of Kuwait, the most significant collectors of Indian jewelled arts in the world. Over the past ten years the exhibition has travelled to a number of leading cultural institutions, including the Louvre and the British Museum. Kuala Lumpur will be the last stop on this global tour.
