Jewellery Studies
Notes for contributors

Jewellery Studies, the journal of the Society of Jewellery Historians, is distributed to all members of the society, and is available for purchase by non-members (apply to address below, or click here ). Authors will receive 25 off-prints of their paper and a copy of the complete volume. The readers of Jewellery Studies come from a wide range of disciplines with an interest in the history of jewellery and gemstones, and your paper should be readable by all.

Copy, including a list of figure captions, should be typed on one side only of good quality A4 paper and a word processor disc supplied, preferably in PC-compatible format. Please ask the editors for further information.

i.	British spelling (as given in The Oxford English Dictionary) should be used.
ii.	Pages should be numbered.
iii.	Titles of journals, catalogues, etc. and non-English words in the text should be in italics.
iv.	Notes should be numbered in the text with a superscript numeral directly after punctuation, eg. …in Paris.¹ and in the end notes: - ² In 1876… Abbreviate where referring to a work cited in full in a previous note, eg. Ogden 1982, op.cit. note 2.

Illustrations should be submitted in the following form:

i.	a) Line drawings – clear originals (not photocopies) in black ink on white paper or board.
	b) Half-tones – good quality glossy black and white prints.
	c) Colour plates – good quality colour transparencies, preferably larger than 35mm. (The number of colour illustrations is limited and contributors should check with the editors before submitting colour photographs).
ii.	All illustrations should be labelled with author’s name and fig. no.
iii.	Captions should include information such as dimensions, owner and accession or inventory number, where relevant, and should include the acknowledgement to the copyright holder.
iv.	Reference to each figure should appear in the text in brackets.
v.	Contributors are responsible for clearing copyright for the illustrations they submit, and for paying any reproduction fees.

Tables:

i.	Simple format tables may be submitted on disc. Otherwise, submit as for line drawings (see above).
ii.	All tables should be numbered separately from figures. Reference to each table should appear in the text in brackets.

The editors will advise contributors of the deadline for submission of text and illustrations. All articles are refereed. The edited text, with any editorial queries, will be returned to the author for approval and clarification where necessary. Any final changes must be made to the text at this stage. Printer’s proofs will be sent to contributors for checking. Proof correction should be kept to an absolute minimum; author’s corrections will only be included at the editors’ discretion. Some illustrations may have to be cut for reasons of space or quality, at the discretion of the editors, but in consultation with the author. The editors’ decision is final.
