Membership of The Society of Jewellery Historians

The membership of The Society of Jewellery Historians consists of archaeologists, museum specialists, collectors, art historians, dealers, gemmologists, practising jewellers and designers, scientists and restorers, and anyone who is simply interested in the subject. Around one-third of members live outside the UK. The membership year lasts from October to the following September.

The Society organises an annual programme of eight lectures for members, which runs from September to June. The speakers represent many different disciplines and come from many parts of the world, although the speech is always in English. Click here for lists of past and future lectures. Lectures are usually held in London, at the beautiful 18th century home of the Society of Antiquaries, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London W1J 0BE. These lectures, usually held on a Tuesday evening, are followed by refreshments in the Council Room, and provide an opportunity for members to meet each other, members of the committee, and the evening’s speaker. Members are warmly invited to attend, and are entitled to bring one guest to any lecture. If it is the first time you have attended a lecture, please make yourself known to a committee member afterwards, so that we can welcome you.

In addition, the Society arranges occasional events, such as private views of special exhibitions, international symposia and one-day seminars on aspects of the history and technology of jewellery, and study visits to museums. Details of these, and booking forms where relevant, will be found in Jewellery History Today and on the members’ news page of this website.

Members also receive our colour magazine Jewellery History Today three times a year, and the illustrated journal Jewellery Studies, which is published on an occasional basis.
